
Pool Decks
A pool deck gets walked on barefoot, wet, by people who are not paying attention. That changes what matters about it.

Slip resistance: what is real and what is marketing
There is no California code section that sets a slip-resistance number for a residential pool deck. The four-foot slip-resistant concrete deck rule people cite is from Chapter 31B of the building code, and Chapter 31B applies to public pools only. It does not apply to your backyard.
The number you will see quoted is 0.55 wet DCOF, from ANSI A326.3. That is a voluntary product standard written for hard-surface flooring, and the standard itself says it does not predict whether a person will slip. We use it as a design benchmark. We do not present it as code, and neither should anyone else.
If a contractor quotes you ASTM C1028, they are working from old information — that test was withdrawn in 2014 with no replacement.
What actually helps: texture running across the direction of travel, generous drainage so water does not sheet across the surface, and avoiding a high-gloss sealer on a surface people run on.
Hardware near a pool
Pool chemistry is hard on metal. We run stainless throughout, and on hardwood there is a second reason for it beyond corrosion: the Forest Products Laboratory documents that high-extractive woods react with the iron in steel fasteners and stain around them, and because galvanized coatings still contain iron, staining is likely with them too.
One correction to something you will read everywhere. The code rule requiring stainless within 300 feet of salt water is about an ocean shoreline. It is not about a saltwater-chlorinated pool. Using 316 stainless around a pool is good practice and it is what we do — it is not a code mandate, and anyone telling you it is has misread the section.
Heat, honestly
There is no independent published dataset comparing barefoot surface temperature across hardwood, composite and PVC. The one comparison circulating widely came from a hardwood supplier and reported three different materials at an identical temperature, which is not a result you get from careful testing.
What is true: surface temperature is driven mostly by colour and sun exposure. A dark board of any material will be unpleasant barefoot on a Valley afternoon. Pick the colour outdoors, in the sun, before you commit — that will tell you more than any manufacturer's chart.
Materials around water
PVC has no wood flour in it, which is the reason it is the usual recommendation near a pool — nothing organic for moisture to work on. Hardwood does very well too and is what we would use if you want the look; it is dense enough that constant wetting is not the problem people assume.
Structure
Footings near a pool shell are a design question, not a table lookup. There is no prescriptive code clearance between a deck footing and a pool wall — the footing needs to sit outside the shell's zone of influence, or the shell needs to be designed for the surcharge. That is the engineer's call.
The code section people cite here, 1808.7.3, is about the setback between a pool and a slope, not between a deck and a pool. Different rule. On a hillside lot with a pool near the edge it is very relevant, just not for the reason it usually gets quoted.
The pool barrier
If we are building a deck around your pool we will tell you where the barrier stands, because a deck can easily wreck a compliant one — a bench, a planter or a wide deck rail beside a fence gives a five-year-old a foothold, and climbability is an actual requirement, not a suggestion.
In unincorporated Los Angeles County, straightforward replacement of decking, tile or coping is treated as cosmetic and does not by itself trigger the pool safety retrofit requirements. That is worth knowing before someone tells you a new deck means a whole new barrier. Other jurisdictions vary, and we check.
