Building decks in Beverly Hills

Beverly Hills splits sharply. The flats south of Sunset are level, generous and mostly a design exercise. North of Sunset the ground climbs into the hills and the work becomes structural.

Those hillside lots, Coldwater, Benedict, the canyons, mean elevated decks with engineered post-and-beam framing, footings sized for the slope, and often a waterproofed assembly over living space. Parts of the hillside area sit inside fire hazard severity zones, where the walking surface has to carry a California State Fire Marshal listing under the Wildland-Urban Interface Code that took over from Chapter 7A in January 2026.

The city runs its own building department and the review is thorough. Expect the permit process to take longer than the equivalent job in the Valley, and plan for it rather than getting surprised by it.
