Building decks in Hollywood

Hollywood covers a lot of ground, from flat streets in the south to hillside lots climbing into the Hollywood Hills, and the two ends need entirely different builds.

The hills are where most of our work is. Those lots drop away steeply behind the house, so the deck is the usable outdoor space and it has to be built for it. Engineered post-and-beam framing, footings sized for the slope, and often a waterproofed assembly over living space below. Access on the narrow canyon streets is a genuine cost factor, and any estimate that ignores it isn't complete.

Parts of the hillside area fall inside fire hazard severity zones. Where they do, the walking surface has to carry a California State Fire Marshal listing under the Wildland-Urban Interface Code, which replaced Chapter 7A and Section R337 in January 2026. That listing is what a plan checker looks for, not a flame-spread rating out of a manufacturer's brochure.

Cable railing comes up often on these view lots. We fabricate our own, along with custom steel, so the railing gets built to the deck rather than ordered to approximate it.
