Deck Building in Pasadena

Danny Deck Construction has been building and repairing decks across Los Angeles since 1995, and Pasadena is one of the areas we work in most.

We build custom hardwood decks in Ipe, Mangaris and Kayu Batu, composite and PVC decks in Trex, TimberTech and AZEK, and the structural work underneath them: new footings, engineered post-and-beam framing, and waterproofed assemblies over living space. We fabricate our own stainless cable railing and custom steel railing, so the railing fits the deck rather than the other way around.

Alongside decks we build pergolas and patio covers, wood fences and gates, deck stairs and landings, and we repair and refinish existing decks that are worth saving rather than replacing. If a repair will do the job we will say so.

Building decks in Pasadena

Two things shape deck work in Pasadena: the foothills, and the architecture.

The northern edge of the city runs up against the San Gabriels in the same foothill band as Altadena, so fire hazard severity zone requirements apply to a good share of properties up there. Under the Wildland-Urban Interface Code that replaced Chapter 7A in January 2026, the deck walking surface has to carry a California State Fire Marshal listing. TimberTech AZEK Vintage and Landmark are both listed Class A with no conditions, and so is Kayu Batu. Trex Transcend, Select, Transcend Lineage and Refuge are listed with a condition on the adjacent wall covering. Trex Enhance isn't listed at all.

The architecture is the other half. Pasadena has a lot of Craftsman, Spanish Colonial and mid-century housing stock where a deck has to look like it belongs. That usually pushes toward hardwood and real timber detailing rather than the obvious composite, and toward railing that matches the house instead of the catalog. We fabricate our own steel and wrought iron railing, which helps on period properties where a stock system would look wrong.

Historic districts and landmark properties carry design review. Worth establishing before anything gets drawn.

Pasadena runs its own building department. Recent work in the area includes a 640 square foot Azek deck with a picture-frame border on North Arroyo.
