Building decks in Rancho Palos Verdes

Rancho Palos Verdes is a serious engineering environment for a deck, and anybody who tells you otherwise hasn't built here.

The peninsula has documented landslide areas, and the city maintains a landslide moratorium zone with its own restrictions on what can be built and where. Any structural work starts with understanding which geological zone a property sits in, because that determines whether a project is straightforward, needs geotechnical input, or isn't going to happen.

Beyond that, the usual peninsula conditions apply. Steep lots, ocean exposure, elevated decks with engineered post-and-beam framing and real footings. Salt air argues for stainless hardware throughout, and for Ipe, Kayu Batu or PVC over wood-content composite.

The city runs its own building department, and much of RPV falls inside the Coastal Zone, so coastal review can sit alongside the building permit. View preservation ordinances are a live consideration here in a way they aren't elsewhere. A structure that blocks a protected view is a problem regardless of whether it's sound.
