Deck Building in Calabasas

Danny Deck Construction has been building and repairing decks across Los Angeles since 1995, and Calabasas is one of the areas we work in most.

We build custom hardwood decks in Ipe, Mangaris and Kayu Batu, composite and PVC decks in Trex, TimberTech and AZEK, and the structural work underneath them: new footings, engineered post-and-beam framing, and waterproofed assemblies over living space. We fabricate our own stainless cable railing and custom steel railing, so the railing fits the deck rather than the other way around.

Alongside decks we build pergolas and patio covers, wood fences and gates, deck stairs and landings, and we repair and refinish existing decks that are worth saving rather than replacing. If a repair will do the job we will say so.

We work directly for homeowners and as a deck subcontractor for general contractors and architects. If you are managing a rebuild and need someone who can read a fire-zone material schedule, that is us.

Building decks in Calabasas

Calabasas is fire country, and building here has always meant working to a stricter standard than the flats. The city sits against the Santa Monica Mountains, most of it in or beside a Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone, and Woolsey came through in 2018.

In January 2026 California consolidated its wildfire-zone construction rules into the California Wildland-Urban Interface Code, replacing Chapter 7A of the building code and Section R337 of the residential code. What it governs is the walking surface, meaning deck boards and stair treads, not the framing underneath. And the requirement isn't a flame-spread number off a brochure. The deck surface has to come from a product carrying a California State Fire Marshal listing, tested with burning embers landing on the deck rather than flame traveling across it.

TimberTech AZEK Vintage and Landmark are listed Class A with no conditions. Kayu Batu, also called Red Balau, the same. Ipe is listed but only through particular suppliers, and their ratings differ. Trex Transcend, Select, Transcend Lineage and Refuge are all listed with a condition on the adjacent wall covering, and Trex Enhance isn't listed at all. We check the product against the State Fire Marshal's listing before it goes on a material schedule.

Calabasas runs its own building department, and the permit process is its own animal. The city publishes fire hazard severity zone guidance separately from its building code adoptions, and hillside lots off Mulholland, Las Virgenes and Old Topanga usually need engineered framing and footings rather than a slab-level build. Where a deck is elevated, the code requires the underside enclosed to grade in compliant material.

A lot of Calabasas work sits behind HOA gates, which adds an architectural review step ahead of the city permit. Build that into the schedule rather than discovering it.
