Building decks in Agoura Hills

Agoura Hills sits where the Santa Monica Mountains meet the 101, and that geography decides most of what a deck here has to be. Fire zone on one side, steep decomposed-granite slopes on the other, and a lot of properties backing directly onto open space.

California's wildfire-zone construction rules moved into the new California Wildland-Urban Interface Code in January 2026, replacing Chapter 7A and Section R337. The part that matters for a deck is the walking surface, meaning boards and stair treads. It has to come from a product with a California State Fire Marshal listing, tested under a standard that puts burning embers on the deck rather than only measuring flame spread across it. Embers are what move through this canyon corridor in a Santa Ana.

The listed products we build with are TimberTech AZEK Vintage and Landmark, both Class A with no conditions attached, Kayu Batu on the same footing, and Ipe through suppliers that actually hold a listing. Trex Transcend, Select, Transcend Lineage and Refuge all need the adjacent wall covering to be noncombustible or ignition-resistant. Trex Enhance carries no listing at all.

Agoura Hills has its own building department. Lots off Kanan, Cornell and up toward Old Agoura tend to be sloped enough that a deck needs real footings and engineered post-and-beam framing, plus the underside enclosed to grade where it's elevated. Oak protection ordinances are worth checking early on properties with mature trees near the build.
